Coming off of a strong year of growth in 2018, the Trinity International University cross country program is prepared for a breakout season in 2019.
“The biggest strength of this team is that we are a family,” said head coach Daniel Durband, who enters his third season as the head of the program.
Both the men’s and women’s teams consist of 6 members each, returning four on each team. The core of this year’s men’s team now enters its third year together, consisting of Justin Chu, Chase Manke, and Jared Backstrom, all of which are juniors this year. The women’s team also has a strong history together led by Junior Captain Shayla Sotelo.
Last year, the Trojans had two national qualifying members in Chase Manke and Lauren Neveau. Both had very impressive seasons and look to continue their success and hard work this season.
“Last year running in the NCCAA National Championship race was great,” Manke said. “It was an incredible environment and atmosphere, one that I am hoping to share with my entire team this coming season.”
“As long as we remain healthy, with the new energy from the new recruits and the community we already have here, it has the potential to be a great season,” said junior runner Jared Backstrom. With the returning talent on each team and the fresh energy from the new runners, the TIU cross country family is ready to tackle the long season ahead.
The Trojans begin their season on Friday, August 30 at the Elmhurst Earlybird Invite at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst.
