David S. Dockery, president of Trinity International University, will be named the 2018 recipient of the John R. Dellenback Global Leadership Award at the International Forum on Christian Higher Education in Dallas Jan. 30 – Feb. 2.
“Dr. David Dockery is a giant in the world of Christian higher education,” CCCU President Shirley V. Hoogstra said in a news release announcing the award. “Not only does he lead by example, but he gladly shares his insights with colleagues from around the world and has mentored many leaders over the years.”
Named for John Dellenback, a former U.S. Congressman from Oregon, former director of the Peace Corps (during the Gerald Ford Administration), and former president of the CCCU (1977-88), the award is considered one of the highest honors that can be given to a Christian educator.
“David Dockery is highly respected as a scholar, author, leader and friend in Christ-centered higher education,” CCCU President Emeritus Robert C. Andringa said. “No one is as deserving as David to receive this distinguished award.”
This Global Leadership Award honors service in the work of Christian higher education in terms of scholarship, publications and overall influence. This is not an annual award, and the CCCU conferred it only five other times since 2006.
“To say the least, I have been overwhelmed since receiving the notification that I was to be the 2018 recipient of this prestigious and meaningful recognition,” Dockery said. “I am immensely grateful for this most undeserved honor. I am thankful beyond words to all who were involved in all aspects of this special recognition.”
Dockery has served the world of Christian higher education for nearly 35 years, including the past 22 as a university president.
“It has been a joyful privilege and an incredible gift from God to serve the Christian higher education community in a variety of ways through the years,” Dockery said. “I can only rejoice at God’s goodness.”
Dockery is the author of the influential work, Renewing Minds: Serving Church and Society through Christian Higher Education. He has also served as editor or co-editor of Faith and Learning; Shaping a Christian Worldview; Theology, Church and Ministry; Christian Leadership Essentials; and the forthcoming Christian Worldview Study Bible.
In addition, he has published more than 25 addition titles in the fields of education, biblical studies, theology and denominational studies. He has contributed to numerous other volumes and periodicals.
Dockery has served as chair of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, the Christian College Consortium, and the Consortium for Global Education. He also serves as president of the Evangelical Theological Society. He has spoken at more than 60 campuses and has provided consultations at numerous others.
